Lipstick Stains on Glasses
Şengün Kılıç Hristidis

Did you know that it was only with the Republic that a woman could go to a restaurant not just to have fun, but simply to eat? Or that, according to a "zaptiye" (gendarmerie) law valid until very recently, a woman found in a place serving alcohol, even if she was a customer, had to show a "permit"?

Journalist and author Şengün Kılıç Hristidis conducts an excavation with a comprehensive research ranging from archival documents to live witnesses. She traces the relationship between women and rakı/alcohol from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic and the present day.

Many people contributed to the book with their writings and interviews; naturally, most of them are women: With contributions from Mutlu Tönbekici, Meri Sevilya, Aybala Yentürk, Sula Bozis, Sumru Toydemir, Efi Kanner, Canan Balkan, Pakize Türkoğlu, Aslı Davaz, Harun Kolçak, Aydın Engin, Ilgın Su, Berrin Tablacıoğlu, Feraye Işıl, Naim Dilmener, Melis Sökmen, Ebru Çapa, Sevda Ferdağ, Elif Key, Racia Adar, Neslihan Kayserilioğlu, Nisan Akman, Şafak Gürgen, Gülten Şen, Ece Aksoy, Deniz Türkali, Güzin Değişmez, Fügen Basmacı, Nilay Lale Yılmaz, Didem Yerdelen, Çağla Öztek, Banu Tuna, Demet Özlen, Filiz Çay, Saadet Kıcır, Burcu Barakacı, and Esin Gedik.

The 500-year-old raki culture continues to rejuvenate over time, incorporating different colors and dynamic energy. While new voices like Hayko Cepkin and Gaye Su Akyol are added alongside classic names such as Hamiyet Yüceses and Müzeyyen Senar, new-generation meyhanes (taverns) are also emerging alongside classic ones. Raki is no longer merely a drink belonging to middle-aged, fatherly men; it is transforming into a culture where people of all stripes blend creativity, taste, zest for life, music, mezzes, and camaraderie. The white of raki is now evolving into a spectrum that embraces differences.

Anason İşleri was born with the aim of bringing this vibrant, revitalized raki culture together with the language of design. They set out to create products that go beyond the office environment and the digital world, touching daily lives, tables, and homes. Adopting the principle of transforming crisis into design, they produced anise-scented products. They have created innovative designs across a wide range, from raki glasses to meze plates, tablecloths to T-shirts, wallpapers to accessories. Anason İşleri aims to give raki culture a universal form by collaborating with innovative designers.
