AZIYADÉ, an elixir infused with the aphrodisiacs of many cultures throughout history, draws us into a sensual feast where the pleasures of love are tightly interwoven with the palate. Not a scent, but a taste. The fertile flesh of AZIYADÉ, the heroine of Pierre Loti's namesake novel, a harem story set in the twilight of the Ottoman Empire – though we now know Loti began as a hero, the embodiment of love.
Is AZIYADÉ a forbidden fruit? The scent opens with pomegranate: for the Greeks, to taste it meant to drink the blood of the intoxicated God Dionysius to experience a cosmic union... Sugared dates, almonds, oranges, and plums are set ablaze by aphrodisiac spices: cardamom, favored by ancient Egyptians to make their kisses even more ardent; Sri Lankan cinnamon, an indispensable ingredient of erotic feasts for Romans, dedicated in their temples to Venus Libentina; ginger, used in China to stimulate mucous membranes, and finally, Egyptian cumin, employed in the sacred prostitution rituals of the Sumerian Empire.
AZIYADÉ's oriental inspiration draws us into the smoke-filled atmosphere of erotic celebrations. Tobacco leaf is invoked alongside raw Indian patchouli, used in magical rituals to arouse sexual desire. Vanilla, an aphrodisiac in the Aztec Empire, exhales its brown notes, complemented by the oily notes of carob fruits.
