When we do not prepare our skin correctly, cuts during shaving, and subsequently redness, irritation, burning, and not getting a clean enough shave are the most common situations. Therefore, the essential first step for both an enjoyable, comfortable, and clean shave is proper preparation.
When preparing our skin for shaving, we apply lather to our skin with a shaving brush and cream/soap, preferably (but highly recommended).
