About Design

Traditional Series

The most traditional (and yes, perhaps the finest) form of shaving is the ritual performed with a classic safety razor (also called a blade razor). It requires some practice and a certain degree of skill. Nevertheless, once someone masters this process after a few (dry) attempts, they will never want to shave any other way again.

The MÜHLE manufactory offers two types of safety razors: one is the open comb version, which requires a direct, forward shaving technique, and the other is the closed comb version, which is quite gentle and flawless. Wonderful freedom of choice: the handles of these products are available in chrome-plated metal with an exquisitely crafted knurled pattern, black, premium resin, and tortoiseshell imitation options. Shaving brushes are compatible with badger hair and Silvertip Fibre® synthetic bristles, and three elegant handle models complete the set. Finally, don't you think traditional shaving is the best of all? In addition, safety razors and shaving brushes are ideal travel companions due to their ideal sizes. The shaving brushes in the series have a knot diameter of 21 mm.

About head anatomy:

Mühle's open comb razors do not have a safety bar. Instead of a safety bar, they have a comb-like structure, and due to the different blade bending angle, the blade can contact the skin directly and at a steep angle.

These razors provide a very close shave and require some getting used to. Because of their comb-like structure, whiskers enter the comb, and the blade can cut the whiskers closer to the skin.

Who can use an open comb razor?

How to Use

Prepare your skin for shaving: For a perfect traditional wet shave, always shave during or after a warm shower. Apply lather to your skin to soften it and prepare the beard for shaving. Applying shaving cream with a shaving brush helps remove dead skin cells and lifts the hairs, preparing them for a comfortable shave. Additionally, if possible, allowing the lather to sit on your skin for at least 1-2 minutes will further soften the beard and allow for an easier shave.
Initial grip: The safety razor should be held at a 30° angle to the skin. To find the correct angle, first hold the razor parallel to your skin. Then slowly raise the razor; stop as soon as you feel the blade touching your skin. This is the 30° angle you should hold it at. You can be sure that after about 5 shaves, you will naturally find the correct angle and gain practice.
First pass: The most important rule to know when using a safety razor is not to press down. Allow the razor's own weight to do its job. Take the first pass in the direction of hair growth. Do not go over areas again where you feel the razor is not cutting your beard. A safety razor cuts by reducing the beard; it does not provide a baby-smooth shave in a single pass. Save these areas for the second pass. One of the simplest causes of irritation is pressing down and repeatedly going over the skin with the razor blade. Do not allow this!
Second pass: After reapplying lather to your skin, clean the remaining hairs in the second pass, also in the direction of hair growth. If you want a closer shave, you can shave perpendicular to the direction of hair growth (from nose to ear or ear to nose).
Rinse – moisturize: After shaving, rinse your skin with cold water, then moisturize, nourish, and refresh it with aftershave balm or aftershave lotion.
